ROLLO TOMASI - WORK SLOW, CRUSH FOES published June 2006, Zero Magazine

Call me old-fashioned. I like rock that rocks and this means epic drums, chunky guitars, bumping bass, angry singer. Rollo Tomasi is a breath of fresh air amidst the tepid climate of bands neglecting the power element of their sound in the pursuit of originality.

Work Slow, Crush Foes is the archetype of the perfect modern rock record in terms of sound. It is relentless, refusing to be pushed to the background and at the perfect moments it is merciful, allotting time to stop head-banging just when you thought your neck was about to snap in two. Lyrically, the album leaves something to be desired but nothing to be annoying. Bland and literal lyrics are better than cheesy ones.

Originally, the name Rollo Tomasi came from the movie L.A. Confidential wherein it was the name given to an anonymous killer. It's a nice little reference yet is accidentally symbolic of the band. As a group, Rollo Tomasi is just another anonymous band. But as an extension of the rock genre, these guys are delivering and in time are certain to evolve into their own.
